ANIMALS AND PLANTS
The
animals and plants of Indonesia
are divided roughly into two groups by an imaginary line (called Wallace line
after the naturalist who established it), which runs north-south between Kalimantan and Sulawesi.
West of this line the plants and the animals are much like those of the South east Asia. There are dense tropical rain forest,
vast number of palm and banana trees , and a great many varieties of wild
flowers. Among the animals in the region are the Orangutan (the words comes
from the Indonesia
orang hutan, or “man from the woods”), the tiger, the wild buffalo, and very
rarely now – the elephant and the rhinoceros. Another animal found here is the
mouse deer (kancil), a tiny creature whose legendary cleverness at out witting
larger enemies has made it the hero of Indonesian folktales.
East of the Wallace Line animal life
is much like that of Australia.
Some more unusual creatures include the kangaroo and the brilliantly feathered
bird of paradise. The reason for the sharp difference in natural life is
probably the fact that the western island
of Indonesia, which lie
in shallow waters, were once a part of mainland Asia.
But the eastern island, which are surrounded by deep seas, were always
separated from continent, and therefore did not develop the same type of
wildlife.
For many years people
believed that the cleverest animals after man were the chimpanzees. Now,
however, there is proof that dolphins may be even cleverer than these big apes.
Although a dolphin lives
in the sea it is not a fish. It is a mammal. It is in many ways, therefore,
like a human being.
Dolphins have a
simple language. They are able to talk to one another. It may be possible for
man to learn how to talk to dolphins. But this will not be easy because
dolphins cannot hear the kind of sounds man can make. If man wants to talk to
dolphins, therefore, he will have to make a third language which both he and
the dolphins can understand.
Dolphins are also very friendly toward man. They often follow ships.
There are many stories about dolphins guiding ships through difficult and
dangerous waters.
